Hi friends! Alicia here from Sew What Alicia! I am so excited to be here to share some fun tips and tricks for using heat transfer vinyl. Today I am going to talk to you about layering heat transfer vinyl on fabric. I am using zipper pouches, if you want to sew your own check out the full tutorial over on my blog. Once you have your surface you are ready to learn how to layer heat transfer vinyl.
How to Layer Heat Transfer Vinyl
When you have a busy print or you really want your vinyl to pop it is a great idea to add a background layer. Layering your heat transfer vinyl is a great technique to master. It is not nearly as hard as it may look! I like to layer a black or white layer of vinyl underneath my colorful or glitter vinyl to make it easier to read and to make the vibrant color of the vinyl pop. Glitter vinyl is notoriously hard to read because of the sparkle. A natural background really helps fix this issue. As you can see from the pictures below the zipper pouches were made with a fun but busy pattern, layering was a must!
Supplies:
- Zipper Pouches (or some other flat fabric surface.)
- Coordinating Heat Transfer Vinyl – you can use a roll or a 12″ square.
- Cut Files – I used these: But first, makeup and Do what you love
- Cutting Machine
- Weeding Tools
- Pressing Cloth or Paper
Instructions:
Using the cut files and the vinyl cut your text onto vinyl that will be your top layer.
Be sure to mirror the text when you use the heat transfer vinyl.
Next use the offset function to create the background text. Check out this tutorial for more detailed instructions on using the offset function for your Silhouette. You can make your offset image large or small to change the look of the layering.
Weed the text. Now you have two sets of wording ready to go. First we will use our pressing paper to iron on the background wording. There is no need to transfer the vinyl, the plastic on the heat transfer vinyl is meant to be used with the iron. Just use a piece of pressing cloth or paper over top to protect your iron.
Now carefully line the second piece of vinyl over the top of the first. Repeat the same steps using your iron and a pressing cloth or paper.
That is it! And you thought it was going to be hard??
